What Is CoDI?

CoDI, short for the Co-Occurring Disorders Institute, was created in 2001 as a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) through Mat Su Health then known as LifeQuest. It was developed to provide the most recent researched models and practices to professionals working with mental health, substance abuse, developmental disabilities and complex behavioral health issues in the Mat Su Borough. Providing trainings and technical assistance, CoDI became a vital partner with all the service providers in the Borough. The success of CoDI soon attracted statewide attention and lead to CoDI getting grants and contracts to provide these services to state agencies, decision makers, and statewide social service providers.

In 2004, Randy Moss, Debi Shade, and Stephanie Suanders incorporated CoDI into a not-for-profit 501(c) 3 corporation.  The Co-Occurring Disorders Institute, Inc was born. The mission of CoDI expanded into providing statewide consultation for the Behavioral Health Integration Project from the State of Alaska Health and Human Services division. It also included managing conferences for Change Agents, The statewide Traumatic Brain Injury programs, and rural mental health issues. CoDI also sponsored statewide conferences featuring national experts discussing cutting edge topics for helping Alaskan citizens.

In 2008, CoDI became the Bring/Keep the Kids Home agent in the Mat Su Borough. This is an effort to help families with youth and children out of state in residential placement or at high risk for the child to be place out of state. CoDI provides a hybrid type of Care Management that is family driven, client centered, and is service brokering for the whole family. We also provide a menu of evidence based family psycho education and parenting courses along with CoDI sponsored support groups. This intent is to keep the youth in their homes when possible and at least in their communities to facilitate family healing.

CoDI also continued to offer trainings and technical assistance for many relevant topics and evidence based and best practices skills and models. Large and small conferences, individual topic research, and community based surveys with other important coalitions make up some of CoDI’s work.  We see ourselves as a partner with and for the community to help promote health and peace for all our citizens.

CoDI is also a recognized training institute with endorsements from NAADAC #571, The National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) # 6061 and the State of Alaska LPC, LMFT and Social Work boards. This speaks to the quality and relevance of the trainings and information that CoDI presents.  Please see the list of topics in the training section.
